Mauritania, Qatar Resume Diplomatic Ties

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Mauritanians Abroad, announced that our country and Qatar decided to resume the diplomatic ties.

In a communique, the ministry said that the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Mauritanians Abroad, Mr. Ismael Ould Cheikh Ahmed, received a generous invitation from his Qatari counterpart, His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, to visit the brotherly country of Qatar. They discussed the ways and means to boost the long-standing brotherly cooperative relations between the two countries.

Here is the complete text of the communique:

‘’After intensive contacts over the past week and with much appreciated support from the Sultanate of Oman, the Islamic Republic of Mauritania and Qatar decided to resume the diplomatic ties.

In this regard, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Mauritanians Abroad, Mr. Ismael Ould Cheikh Ahmed visited, on generous invitation from his Qatari counterpart, His Excellency Mr. Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, Qatar, where he held two meetings with his host. They discussed the long-standing brotherly relations between the two countries.

The two ministers stressed the keenness of His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, Emir of Qatar, and his brother, President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, president of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, to preserve the historical and fraternal ties between the two countries and the two brotherly peoples.

Based on the discussions, the two ministers agreed to resume diplomatic relations between the Islamic Republic of Mauritania and the State of Qatar and to reopen the embassies as soon as possible.

At the end of the meeting, the two ministers thanked the Sultan of Oman, His Majesty Haitham Ben Tariq Al Said, for the good offices made by Oman in this context’’.
