The President of the Republic: “The Russian-African Summit will be a solid bridge for constructive cooperation in the service of our common interests”

Sochi (Russia),  24/10/2019
The President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani said that the first Russian-African summit will provide a solid bridge for constructive cooperation in the service of our common interests.
He added in a speech he made on Thursday at the opening of the first Russian-African Summit that “relations with the Federal Republic of Russia are relations of friendship and solid cooperation, especially in the areas of fisheries, training and higher education”.
Here is the full text of the President’s address:

“Excellency President Vladimir Putin, President of the Federal Republic of Russia,
Excellency Mr. Abdel Vettah Esissi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Current Chairperson of the African Union,
Your Majesty, Excellencies Heads of State and Government,
Mr. Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I would like, first of all, to express my sincere thanks to His Excellency Mr. Vladimir Putin, President of the Federal Republic of Russia and through him to the Government and the people of Russia for the warm welcome and generous hospitality since our arrival in this beautiful city.
I would also like to express my thanks to the Chairpersons of the Summit, His Excellency Vladimir Putin, President of the Federal Republic of Russia, and His Excellency Abdel Vettah Esissi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, current Chairperson of the African Union.
Holding the first edition of this summit reflects the solidity of the relations between Russia and the African countries and at the same time translates the sincerity of our common will to strengthen and deepen these relationships and bring them to more diverse and global levels.
In addition to what unites them as sincere relations of cooperation, Russia and Africa share many common principles and positions.
They share the concern to build a more just and balanced international multipolar order and to develop a sustainable development system as they support the just issues and firmly condemn all forms of violence and terrorism with the aim of contributing to the establishment of security and peace in the world.
Our continent is working to achieve the 2063 Agenda sustainable and comprehensive development goals as evidenced by the recent establishment of the African Free Trade Area for the desired African economic integration.
At the same time, our continent’s efforts are focused on addressing the major security challenges it is facing. In this framework, it is necessary to diversify and deepen our partnerships hence the importance of our current conference which will undoubtedly contribute to establish a common and global strategic vision to develop a fruitful and constructive partnership between our African states and Russia.
The security situation in the Sahel is deteriorating as it has been described by my brothers, heads of State of the G-5 Sahel countries, respectively President Kaboré, President Idriss Deby and President Ibrahima Boubacar Keita. I personally have nothing to add to this description except the need to fight terrorism in this area and I support what has been said in this context by my brothers presidents.
In the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, our relations with the Federal Republic of Russia are relations of friendship and solid cooperation, especially in the fields of fisheries, training and higher education.
These relations were based on mutual respect and permanent consultation as confirmed by the signing, in Nouakchott in May 2017, of the memorandum of political consultation between the two countries.
In Mauritania, we are determined, like other African countries, to contribute to the development and deepening of relations between Africa and Russia and to take advantage of our geopolitical position, our natural resources, the promotion of private sector and the favorable business climate in our country as well as the many investment opportunities it offers to intensify bilateral relations with Russia; a country that is making great progress in various fields.
We are convinced that this summit will give a strong impetus to Russian-African relations and will help to build a solid bridge of constructive cooperation in the service of our common interests.

Thank you "
