President of Republic Issues decree pardoning 222 prisoners of public right convicted of final sentences

The President of the Republic, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El-Ghazouani, issued a decree pardoning 222 prisoners of public right convicted by final sentences, according to a statement issued today by the Presidency of the Republic.

Below is the text of the statement:

“The Presidency of the Republic announced that on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, and based on the requirements of Article 37 of the Constitution, the President of the Republic issued a decree pardoning 222 prisoners of public right convicted by final sentences.

This pardon includes:

-Dropping the remainder of the sentence, on humanitarian grounds, for the benefit of 4 critically ill prisoners.

-Replacing the death penalty as retribution with imprisonment for 4 prisoners after the parents pardoned.

- Reducing one year of custodial sentence for the benefit of 214 prisoners, with the exception of the reduction of one effective year for crimes related to terrorism, murder, embezzlement, waste of public funds and slavery.
