President of Republic, Senegalese Counterpart Lay Foundation Stone for Rosso Bridge

On Tuesday in Rosso, The President of the Republic, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, and His Senegalese Counterpart, His Excellency Mr. Macky Sall, laid the foundation stone of the Rosso Bridge, which will promote transport and trade exchange between the brotherly countries.

The construction of the Rosso Bridge comes in response to the growing demand for transport on the axis linking Europe to Africa, passing through our country and the Republic of Senegal.

In response to this rapid growth in transport and to promote regional integration and strengthen the bonds of brotherhood between the two brotherly peoples, the Governments of the two countries decided to build a bridge on the Senegal River. The construction works will be completed within 30 months.

The Chinese Company POLY CHANGDA has won the contract for the project construction. The total cost of the project is EUR 44 million. The project also includes three more contracts related to the study and design of border control stations, awareness-raising of the residents of the project area on the prevention of infectious diseases, environmental protection and road safety, the evaluation of the social and economic impact of the project.

The project is supervised by a technical unit and a joint specialized high committee under the tutelage of the transport ministries in the two countries.

The bridge is 1,481 meters long and 7.2 meters wide, spread in two directions, while the pedestrian pier is 2.125 meters wide and the bike pier is 2.425 meters wide.

The project's annexes include the rehabilitation of 10 km of urban road network in the Mauritanian part of The City of Rosso, the expansion and modernization of its drinking water system, the construction of 65 km of supported sand roads in the Senegalese part, the construction of several buildings on both sides, and the completion of several important studies aimed at developing and modernizing the project's area.

The total cost of this project and its annexes is EUR 87.63 million, funded by the governments of the two countries, the African Development Bank, the European Union, and the European Investment Bank.
