The President of the Republic participates, via videoconference, in the 19th CILSS summit

Nouakchott,  20/07/2020
Nouakchott, 20 July 2020 (AMI) - The President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazwani, participated, on 20 July via videoconference, in the works of the 19th ordinary summit of heads of state and government of member countries of the Interstate Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS) held in the Burkina Faso capital, Ouagadougou, with the participation of the technical and financial partners of the committee.
CILSS was founded on 12 December 1973 in Ouagadougou following a drought wave that hit the Sahel region, whereby member states decided at that time to coordinate efforts to confront the phenomenon, given the inability of each country to address it by its own means, which required significant regional solidarity to confront it.
The few years following the establishment of the CILSS have witnessed the establishment of an institution called the Sister Foundation, which included the Friends of the Sahel Club. It represented a parallel mechanism consisting of the major donors to the committee, namely Canada, France, the European Union and the United States.
The objectives of the committee are mainly to provide food security and combat desertification by funding development programs in the CILSS space.
Our country has assumed the presidency-in-office of the committee three times since its establishment, the last of which was in 2012.
Over the past 45 years of its establishment, the committee has achieved tremendous work in the field of mobilizing and raising the public opinion’s awareness on the seriousness of climate and environmental fluctuations that threaten the Sahel countries. It has also succeeded in the field of technical support and the mobilization of important financial resources.
CILSS faces many challenges that necessitate cooperation in order to address environmental degradation in the Sahel states and help the population, especially in the countryside, to achieve decent standard of living in their places of origin.
The requirements of the current stage also require the committee to adopt a new, consistent and more appropriate approach based on the accuracy of selection, rigor in programming and transparency in the implementation of the tasks.
