MNPT Participates in International Meeting Against Overuse of Pretrial Detention

On 29-30 July 2021, the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture (MNPT) participated, via videoconference, in an international meeting organized by the Association for the Prevention of Torture, in collaboration with Togo’s National Commission for Human Rights, under the theme, "Reduction of the excessive use of pretrial detention".

In her intervention, the Chairperson of the MNPT, Ms. Moulaty Mint El Moctar, indicated that the Mauritanian authorities and the MNPT are working to reduce the overuse of pretrial detention.

She highlighted the exceptional use of pretrial detention in our country and the importance of strengthening the exchange of expertise.

The MNPT had organized, last Friday, the third session of its general assembly for the year 2021. On the agenda of this session were several points including the discussion of the report of visits to prisons and places of deprivation of liberty in the wilayas of Nouakchott, as well as the expert's report on the draft organizational texts of the administration and the five-year strategy 2021-2025.
