Nouakchott,  07/04/2021
"I was impressed by the degree of mobilization of the Mauritanian authorities to respond to the challenges of security and development", declared Mr. Djime Adoum, High Representative of the Coalition for the Sahel, during a news briefing held Wednesday in Nouakchott.

Mr. Adoum, who was received by the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, indicated that “Mauritania is a determined actor for the security and development of the populations of the Sahel and has been able to develop solutions that are specific to it”.

The High Representative of the Coalition for the Sahel also praised Mauritania's “leading role” within the G5 Sahel. "Mauritania exercised a proactive presidency of the G5, until last February, with in particular, as an important success, the emergence of the Coalition that I represent before you", declared Mr. Adoum. Mauritania reaches out through the Islamic and Arab knowledge that it is now proposing to use in the search for peace in the Sahel”, as he put it.

The news briefing was attended by Mr. Angel Losada, Special Representative of the European Union for the Sahel, Mr. Frederic Bontems, Special Envoy of the French Republic for the Sahel, and Ms. Paradis Anne- Françoise, Chargée d'affaires of the delegation of the European Union in Mauritania.

The Coalition has set itself the objective of “providing a collective and united response to the severe crisis hitting the Sahel”.

Announced at the Pau summit in France in January 2020, it was founded in April of the same year around the countries of the G-5 Sahel, the European Union, and its member states, with the support of the United Nations and the African Union.

The coalition "adopted on March 19 an ambitious roadmap with specific development and security objectives for the populations of the G-5 Sahel countries".

Early in the summer of 2021, the heads of state of the Coalition for the Sahel will meet to measure progress made.
